Hardship Payment

The student council fulfils its social responsibility by providing short-term financial support to students in financial need who are denied other financial support for a variety of reasons.

If you are a student at Heidelberg University and suddenly find yourself in a financial emergency through no fault of your own and there is no other option open to you, you can apply for the emergency grant. Please note the references to other public and governmental assistance.

If you do not have enough money for a study-related excursion, you are also in the right place here. On this page, you will find all the documents and information you need to apply. Please read the information carefully so that we receive your application as completely as possible. This is important so that your application can be processed promptly.

The awarding of funds is based on legal regulations that were passed by the Student Council in 2016.

What documents must be submitted for a complete application?

Fully completed and signed application form

  • Bank statements for the last three months before the start of the application (for all accounts, for married persons also from spouses)
  • Description of your case with special attention to how you got into the situation, what effects it has on your studies and ideas on how to find a long-term solution to the financial emergency (at least 1 page; preferably written on a PC)
  • Certificate of enrolment for the current semester (if applications are submitted shortly before the end of the semester, if possible also the certificate of enrolment for the next semester)
  • A confirmation of health insurance that is not older than two weeks.
  • For people without EU citizenship and people with asylum or asylum application: An official proof of the residence status (e.g. fictitious certificate) or the asylum application.

If you cannot submit one or more of these documents immediately, please send us the rest of the documents by e-mail and explain the problem. For most applications, we will have to check the content again anyway, so this will shorten the time it takes to process your application. Please send us the documents as a single file in PDF format.

Amendments:

On 6.11.2018, the StuRa passed an amended version of the hardship case regulations (the extension for support for excursions).
On 17.07.2019, the hardship case regulation was once again adjusted in the StuRa so that childcare allowances as well as health and pension insurance subsidies according to BAföG are now also possible.
On 14.02.2023, the term „hardship case“ was replaced by „emergency situation“, so that since then only the „Emergency Situation Grant“, the „Emergency Situation Committee“ and the „Regulations on Grant Allocation in Emergency Situations“ or „Emergency Situation Regulations“ are referred to.

Application form for financial hardship payments

The Emergency Committee decides in a non-public session on the basis of the data and facts provided by the applicants on the award, amount and duration of the grant. In doing so, it is bound by the provisions of the emergency situation regulations. The members of the current emergency committee are listed here. They endeavour to meet within seven days of receiving a complete application.
